Default Situational awareness

This post is directed at a West Virginia driver of a green Surbaru going into Loudoun county VA each day, but it applies to all. By all means practice hypermiling, but think what each technique does to other drivers, especially during times of heavy traffic.

Top 2 things to avoid.
1. Merging below speed into heavy traffic. Yes you are using less gas by gradually accelerating, but have just caused 10,,20,,30,, who knows how many other people hit their breaks. Just think of how you try to avoid using the break as wasted energy them muliply that by 20 or so and that is what merging below speed into heavy traffic is costing.

2. Slow acceleration at a busy light. Again gas is saved by a gradual acceleration but gas is also lost from the 5 or so cars that will now have to idle through another light cycle.

If you really want to save gas and make hypermiling more viable. Do what I do. It will 100% of the time double your MPG. Car Pool.

I have a subaru, but that one's not me. I think your right on both points. Causing other drivers to slam on their brakes, or sit at stop lights is definitely not good for saving gas. Yea, you might save a few cents next time at the pump, but many others lose a few cents at the pump. The point is, you have to be observant of others. If you can drive slow, and not prevent others from losing MPGs, then go ahead and hypermile, if not, then people need to get out of everyone's way.

BTW, I Car Pool also between my 2 other co-workers. It definitely helps save money and gas. Plus, we can ride the HOV lane all the way to work saving more gas, and smerking at others who have to sit through traffic.

Situation awareness, or SA, is the perception of environmental elements within a volume of time and space, the comprehension of their meaning, and the projection of their status in the near future.
